About us

The Marfa Bird Club is…

Inclusive - we aim to make birding accessible to all who have interest in wildlife and the outdoors, and to harness access, knowledge, heritage, and passion for birds into tools for building community and relationships with the land. We welcome all ages, identities, and experience levels.

Low impact - we practice leave no trace principles and aim to leave our environment the same, or better, as how we found it. We carpool, walk, and ride bikes to watch birds.

Low fidelity - we appreciate birds first and foremost in the moment. We are not an expert photography club but we love to share, we value experience over perfection, and we welcome documentation of all forms.

Loosely formed - we are passionate about birds but also about the solitude of West Texas, and thus we meet occasionally and informally.

In the Chihuahuan Desert – we are deep in the heart of the largest and most ecologically diverse desert in North America. From the riparian zone along the Rio Grande River, to the desert scrub, the chaparral, grasslands, and montane ecozones, we aim to observe the birds that live and migrate through this incredible region.

About our logo

Marfa, the plateau of the Chihuahuan Desert upon which Marfa sits, and the Big Bend region of Texas, are home to many incredible species of birds not found anywhere else in the country. This remote land is also the gateway for migration for an incredible number and variety of birds.

Our logo contains a Great Blue Heron because a sighting of these majestic birds in our arid environment is a very special occasion. As waterbirds, GBHs aren’t often seen on the Marfa plateau. But after a good rain or a great rainy season, they can be observed stalking through low water areas outside of town and the banks of the Rio Grande river. We celebrate common birds as much as the rare species, as together they create the diversity that makes this region one of a kind.
